Sketches from Africa was composed to reflect the vibrant and diverse cultural atmosphere of Africa. African music is renowned for its
extensive use of percussion, complex rhythmic patterns, and frequent mixed meters. While this composition does not incorporate authentic African folk songs or melodies, it employs a broad range of percussion and open harmonies that evoke an authentically inspired African character.
Throughout the work, the composer makes use of a hexatonic scale (six
note scale) consisting of the following concert pitches: B-flat, C, D,

E-flat, F, and A-flat. Mixed meter is also applied consistently across the piece.
