Timothy W. Farnsworth is a retired instrumental music educator and American wind band composer whose career spans more than four decades of inspiring young musicians through the tradition of wind band music. His compositions are characterized by expressive melodies, rich harmonic language, and engaging rhythmic structures—qualities shaped by his extensive experience in the instrumental music classroom and his deep understanding of both pedagogy and instrumentation.
A resident of Lafayette, Louisiana, Farnsworth’s musical journey began at the University of Southwestern Louisiana (now the University of Louisiana at Lafayette). During his years at USL, he performed in the university’s premier ensembles while developing his skills in music education, conducting, arranging, orchestration, and music theory. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree in 1982.
Following graduation, Farnsworth embarked on a distinguished career as an instrumental music educator, teaching students at every level—from elementary and middle school through high school—in both public and private school settings. His passion for teaching, combined with his ability to engage and inspire young musicians, resulted in consistently successful ensembles. Under his direction, symphonic, jazz, and marching bands earned superior ratings at regional and national festivals.
Farnsworth’s dedication to music education has also led to opportunities as a guest conductor, clinician, and adjudicator. His experience working with young musicians at all levels has given him a unique perspective on the challenges and rewards of developing a successful ensemble.
Although retired from the instrumental music classroom, Farnsworth continues to share his passion for music through composition. Encouraged by his longtime friend and mentor, Dr. Quincy Hilliard, composer-in-residence at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, he has devoted increasing attention to creating music for today’s young performers.
Farnsworth’s compositions are a natural extension of his many years as a teacher. Each work reflects his understanding of how young musicians learn and develop, balancing meaningful musical challenges with opportunities for success and artistic expression. His growing catalog encompasses works for ensembles at a wide range of grade levels, from energetic fanfares and substantial concert works to lighter selections featuring Latin, Caribbean, and funk-inspired rhythms.
Through his compositions, Farnsworth continues the work that has defined his career: encouraging young musicians to discover the joy of making music, challenging them to grow as performers, and sharing his love of music and teaching with ensembles and educators around the world.
